Helping Hands Club
Artifact: Helping Hands Club Invite
Description: I founded the Dolsen Helping Hands Club in 2012-2013 with the idea of giving fourth grade students an opportunity to spread the message of "taking care of others." I wanted students to develop empathy and compassion and to support the needs of others. At Dolsen, it is important that we take care of ourselves, each other, and our school! Students of the Helping Hands Club partner with the Dolsen Community to support charitable organizations in bringing resources to families in need. In addition, the Helping Hands Club support other activities at Dolsen to support the school-wide "Taking Care of Others" initiative.
Some of the charitable organizations we have sponsored include:
- Active Faith
- Detroit Children's Hospital
- Children's Craniofacial Association
- Alex's Lemonade Stand
- A local teacher whose son is battling cancer
- Leader Dogs for the Blind
Rationale for Inclusion and Reflection: This club demonstrates my commitment to teaching and modeling for kids how to act and live with integrity, fairness, and ethnics. Some of the most important ideas we can model and teach our children as teachers and leaders are the traits of compassion, empathy, and kindness. There is nothing more profound or rewarding than to see kids reach out to others and make a difference!
