Standard IV - Collaboration with Families and Community
With Families
Artifact: Sailing into Summer with Children's Literature - Literacy Workshop - resource handouts for parents
Description: Building and sustaining positive school relationships with families and caregivers is a top priority for me. I work very hard to build relationships with families. Outside of the things I do in my classroom to build relationships, I always make an effort to be present at family events, such as back to school picnics, etc. I also have organized Family Math Game Night and a "Run Wild" Family event at the Detroit Zoo. In addition to the family fun events, I also strive to provide families with tools to support the academic success of their child, such as conducting literacy workshops for parents to help support their children's reading lives. I also attend PTO meetings as much as possible.
Rationale for Inclusion and Reflection: This literacy workshop was designed to provide families with resources to help their children "sail into summer" with reading on their minds! This workshop and the family fun events I have led, along with other events that I have either organized or attended demonstrate my ability to collaborate with families and build and sustain school relationships with families and caregivers. It is my belief that families and caregivers are an integral part of the educational process and positive relationships should be established and maintained as top priority.
