Standard VI - Advocacy for Student Learning and the "Bigger Picture"
Twitter Professional Learning Network (PLN)
Artifact: Twitter PLN
Description: Teachers and schools cannot teach in isolation. It is important for teachers to branch out into the larger educational community as a way to assess emerging trends and initiatives. I have a very active professional learning network through Twitter and have sustained many hours of professional learning and growth through my PLN. This PLN allows me to follow what's current in the politics of education as well. I am able to connect with other educators in Michigan, as well as, around the world to share ideas for building a culture of learning! In addition to the PLN I have created on Twitter, I launched a school-wide hashtag #dolsenthinkers and led professional learning for teachers ("Breakfast Treats and Twitter") on how to use Twitter to share our educational story.
Rationale for Inclusion and Reflection: My Twitter PLN demonstrates my ability to connect with other teachers and leaders that have common ideas and learning interests. Eric Sheninger (@E_Sheninger) in Digital Leadership (2014) writes "the construction of a PLN enables leaders to harness the power inherent in twenty-first century technologies in order to create a professional growth tool that is accessible whenever and wherever necessary." I truly believe that since I have built my PLN, my professional learning has grown exponentially and I now have access to a tool for professional growth whenever and wherever I want!
