A building-level education leader applies knowledge that promotes the success of every student through a substantial and sustained educational leadership internship experience that has school-based field experiences and clinical internship practice withing a school setting and is monitored by a qualified, on-site mentor.
As part of my Oakland University Master's in Educational Leadership program, I participated in a 22-month long internship under the supervision of my mentor and principal. As part of that internship I obtained over 480 hours of leadership experiences spanning the Michigan Standards for School Leaders. As part of that internship experience, I prepared plans of work, logs, and reflections for each year of the internship. For more details on those specific experiences and how they correlate to the standards, click on the detailed standard pages at the top of the website.
Artifact: Plan of Work - Years One and Two
Reflection: For each year of my internship, I prepared a list of internship goals and corresponding activities that were aligned to the Michigan Standards for School Leaders. I prepared at least one goal for each standard and for some standards, I prepared more than one goal. After preparing my goals, I met with my mentor to discuss, revise, and refine as needed. As the year progressed, I reflected on meeting the goals through progress reports, as well as, the maintenance of the internship log (see below). At the end of each year, I reflected on the entire year and how the experiences I gained met the standards (see below as well). I felt this planning process was extremely helpful to ensure that I gained experience in all of the standards that are considered necessary to be a successful school leader in the State of Michigan.
Artifact: Internship Log - Years One and Two
Reflection: For each year of my internship, I logged leadership activities as a way to ensure that I was gaining experiences in relation to my standards and my goals. As part of the internship, interns were asked to log a minimum of 220 hours. Due to my active leadership involvement at my school and in my district, I was able to more than double the required minimum. I felt it was very helpful to log the experiences, because often I didn't realize how much of a leader role I have taken in my school and district.
Artifact: Internship Reflection - Years One and Two
Reflection: At the end of each internship year, I prepared a detailed self-assessment of progress toward state expectations and standards. Using the standards as a guide, I reflected on new understandings and skills that were gained from the combination of coursework and internship experiences. These reflections helped me reflect on my goals and to identify areas for future growth.
