Standard II - School Culture and Instructional Program
Developing School Culture and Dispositions for 21st Century Learning
Artifact: South Lyon Herald Newspaper article, also printed in the Dolsen Discovery
Description: Serving as a teacher-leader in my building over the past 8 years, I have been working on many aspects of school culture including serving on the Cultures of Thinking leadership team since 2011. In addition, I feel strongly about creating an environment and school culture that supports the "whole child" and includes social-emotional learning as well. Accordingly, I have founded and led "Taking Care of Others" and "Taking Care of Ourselves" initiatives at Dolsen. These initiatives tie directly into Dolsen’s school rules of “We take care of ourselves. We take care of each other. We take care of our school. We are ready to learn!” In fall of 2014, I presented to staff on Curriculum Day a session titled, "The Whole-Brained Dolsen Learner: Developing School Culture and Skills for 21st Century Learning," and wrote a newspaper article for the South Lyon Herald and the Dolsen Discovery communicating our vision of learning.
Rationale for Including and Reflection: This newspaper article demonstrates my ability to articulate a to the community our shared vision and commitment to school culture and an instructional program that meets the needs of all students. I learned it is important to attend to all aspects of school culture.
