Standard VI - Advocacy for Student Learning and the "Bigger Picture"
Bond Issuance Committee
Artifact: Bond Committee Member List
Description: In the spring of 2014, I was asked by our Superintendent to serve on the Bond Issuance Committee for our district for the upcoming year. Our district brought a $64.4 million dollar bond proposal to the community on May 5, 2015. The committee was charged with making recommendations to the Board of Education regarding the content and dollar amount of the bond issue. The committee was asked to consider the major components of the bond issue, including but not limited to capital improvements, new technology equipment, and the physical structure of a new elementary school. I was excited about advocating for student learning at the district level on this committee and being able to influence the larger political context of learning.
Rationale for Inclusion and Reflection: I included this experience in my portfolio because it demonstrates my ability to work on a larger scale educational issue. I learned the importance of making decisions based on doing first what is best for kids while supporting the district mission statement, guiding principles, and curricula. I also learned about the importance of striving for equity of facilities, while recognizing the importance of safety and security; and learning how to best integrate instructionally appropriate technology. I also learned the importance of using guiding principles to make decisions and how to be accountable to the community.
